Theatre Arts Department, PAAU, tours Campus with Drama-Based Health and Hygiene Sensitization
Final-year students of the Theatre Arts Department at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, have embarked on a dynamic initiative aimed at promoting health and hygiene awareness within the campus. The Head of Department, Professor O.P Egwemi, noted that this initiative is part of the practical component of the Theatre for Health and Social Services Promotion (THA 419) course. Professor Egwemi emphasized that within the framework of this course, the Department actively engages in socially relevant sensitization programs concerning health within the University’s immediate community.
Ms Blessing Ikwuji, the Course Lecturer, highlighted the elective course’s focus on preparing future Theatre Professionals to utilise Theatre as a potent tool for various social impacts. She noted that with the University’s adequate on-campus hostel facilities, it is significant to sustain discussions on healthy living and hygiene. Given the University’s diverse student body, she emphasised the importance of utilising the dramatic medium as an effective means of communication on crucial health issues such as hygiene and drug abuse.
The drama presentations on February 29, 2024, orchestrated by the students illuminated the detrimental effects of drug abuse, particularly on mental health and overall well-being. Moreover, they underscored the advantages of maintaining a clean environment and demonstrated how cultivating good health and hygiene habits can foster positive attitudes towards academic endeavours.
Ms Blessing stated that the initiative not only serves to educate students on vital health practices but also fosters a culture of responsibility and awareness within the University Community. She added that by utilizing drama as a medium, the Theatre Arts Department is effectively leveraging its resources to address pertinent social issues and promote positive behavioural change among students. This innovative approach according to Ms Blessing, exemplifies the Department’s commitment to not only academic excellence but also societal relevance and impact.
